Motivation vs. Avoidance: Finding the Balance

Carlos Alcaraz has commented on Novak Djokovic’s 400-week reign as World No. 1 and his loss to the Serb in the semifinals of the 2023 ATP Finals. Djokovic secured his eighth year-end No. 1 ranking after defeating Holger Rune in the group-stage match at the year-end tournament. This achievement also marked 400 weeks as World No. 1 for Djokovic, which he would officially reach after the conclusion of the tournament in Turin, Italy. Alcaraz, who was defeated by Djokovic in the semifinals, expressed his aspirations to replicate the achievements of the 24-time Grand Slam champion. He expressed both motivation and admiration for Djokovic’s record-breaking performances, stating, “It’s really, really difficult. It’s something that a legend from our sport could make it. It’s unbelievable what he’s doing, just breaking records, winning every tournament that he goes. It’s crazy. It’s a mix of motivation and a mix of I don’t want to think about it (smiling).” Alcaraz also acknowledged Djokovic’s relentless performance, with the Serb maintaining a high level of play throughout the match. He recognized Djokovic as the best player in the world. Despite his loss, Alcaraz remains determined to challenge and surpass Djokovic’s achievements in the future.
